Maha receives nutritious meals

Maha
Ten-year old Maha lives with her mother in a ramshackle house at a compound for displaced families. The house is made of wood and sheets of metal that move whenever a strong wind blows, allowing rain water to intrude into the home. Maha’s father died six years ago, leaving her widowed mother to care for her and three brothers. Maha left school and worked with her mother as a house maid and sometimes sell sweets on the streets. During this time, she was exposed to a lot of hardship and abuse. She also suffered from hunger and would cry when she saw other kids going to school, longing to return to school herself. Thanks to the support of donors like you, caring Iraqis in her community were able to reach out to Maha and she is now receiving nutritious meals and tutoring to help prepare her to return to school as soon as possible.

Aseel finally receives appropriate care

Aseel
Aseel, a 7-year old girl, lives in extreme poverty at a compound for desperately poor displaced people. Their home is built of mud and she did not go to school. To support the family, Aseel’s father collects cans from piles of garbage and her mother begs on the street, taking Aseel with her to help beg. In addition, Aseel suffered from skin disease and nutritional deficiency because she did not eat well and didn’t receive appropriate care for her personal hygiene. Caring adults in her Iraqi community reached out to her, successfully persuading her mother to stop taking her to beg in the streets. Thanks to loving support from donors like you, Aseel is now receiving tutoring, nutritious meals, and care for her health.

Mojtaba is regaining confidence

Mojtaba
Mojtaba is a 13-year old boy whose father was killed in sectarian violence when Mojtaba was 8. His family was forced to flee to an area where displaced families found temporary sanctuary. Mojtaba was deeply traumatized by the loss of his father, losing both a parent who had loved him greatly as well as his sense of safety. Mojtaba had been a good student at school but after his father died, he was overcome with fear, sadness, and loss of confidence in his ability to do anything. What made matters worse, the eldest brother who had become the family breadwinner treated Mojtaba cruelly and beat him harshly from time to time. Mojtaba become lonely and sad, lost in tears, and fearful that no one cared about him. But the story does not end there. Local Iraqi caregivers, supported by donors like you, found Mojtaba and intervened to stop the abuse he faced and helped him regain his confidence and sense of safety. He began to read again and write, sing, and play. His next big step will be to return back to school.

Reem escapes from the streets

Siba is only seven years old — she lives with her family in a desperately poor area in a single room made ​​of cans and mud. Deana is back in school

Nine year old Deana lives with her divorced mother under conditions of extreme poverty. Although she is a child, she left school and her childhood to work with her mother, laboring hard and long in cleaning houses. Deana dreamed of returning to school and one day even becoming a teacher. Because caring adults in her Iraqi community learned of her plight and reached out to her, Deana was given a chance to receiving tutoring, a healthy breakfast and lunch, health care, and time for recreation and play along with other children. Marwa is in a safe place

Marwa is seven year old and lives with her widowed mother and four sisters in a very poor area. After Marwa’s father died, they no longer had a breadwinner and her widowed mother is unable to work on an ongoing basis because of an illness. Instead, the family is dependent on handouts from locals. Marwa was unable to attend school and suffered a difficult life of deprivation, hunger, and lack of normal childhood care.
